Behind the Scenes: Mysterious Beauty shot by Billie Muller

My dear friend and incredibly gifted photographer Billie Muller never seizes to amaze me. Having turned her studio into Arabia's Long Lost World of Mysticism and Beauty, I was left speechless when I entered to greet the team. She had single-handedly built this amazingly beautiful set overnight now being bedazzled by her BFF the fogger.

The shoot was styled by Mo Al Falasi who pulled an amazing array of dresses from Balmain and D&G to Ezra, not to mention countless pairs of Louboutins ... the man has style for sure, albeit expensive style!

The artist who transformed the amazingly stunning German model Stefanie Ost into 5 very different persona was the incredibly talented Makeup & Hair Artist Jessie Tabla. His makeup and hair creations were just fabulous and ever so photogenic.

Congratulations to the team for creating such wonderful images!

"I am studying French.
For me Fashion is a way to express my creativity,
It depends in wich mood I am.
Today, my look is like tired-relaxed, a little
hang-over. I love to meet new people and experiment
news things. I dislike narrow-mind people that don't enjoy
life. My message to the world: Style is to know what you
are and what you want, and don't give a fuck about the rest !"

Makeup Artist Portfolio Advice - My Portfolio

Following the "Makeup Artist Portfolio Advice" post from May 2010 I have received soooo many requests from you guys asking to see my actual portfolio book and some of my portfolio work.

So, here finally my portfolio, below you can see the first couple of pages and the last page with my Zed Cards.

** NOTE: the pages are all neat and flat not crinkly like in the photos below

I bought my portfolio book from House of Portfolios in New York (they ship to Dubai) and have all images (besides my actual tear sheets) reproduced by ProLab in Al Quoz, Dubai, UAE.

Here are some of the images that are currently in my portfolio.

** The penultimate Black & White image was actually taken by me and was a photograph shot at the end of a training session back when I was in school training to become a Makeup Artist. I have always wanted to reproduce this makeup during a proper photo shoot with the same beautiful model with the most amazing eyes Emilia Bogosel ... maybe one day.

Mix & Catch

My Yearly Dilemma, In Pictures

Jeans - Kohl's | Plaid shirt - Kohl's | Feather earrings - Forever 21 | Ivory bracelets - Gift from mommy | Boy scout belt - "Gift" from a friend

This is how I usually like to dress. I'm not a big fan of shorts or skirts, especially not in the summer time, because my thighs get all sweaty, etc. If I do wear shorts or skirts, I usually have tights, stockings or leggings underneath.

But when it's 102 degrees F out, as it is today, you can see why wearing a fuzzy dress shirt and jeans might not be a good idea.

And yet, I own very little that can keep me cool. How did this happen? How did I end up with a wardrobe that is pretty much only fall/winter appropriate?

I have a solution -- I'm going to start spending my summers in the southern hemisphere. Perfect, right! Now all I have to do is find a way to get a plane ticket and accommodations for $5.

Workwear...for the summer... in the city.

The title's a variation on "Summer in the City" by The Lovin' Spoonful, which is seriously one of the best songs I've ever heard.

Anyway, I had to dress up for my group's presentation in class... I won't bore you with the details of the project, but we did it as a newscast and people really liked it! But back to my point -- dressing in a manner that's both work-appropriate and cool (temperature-wise, not in a "street cred" way) can be hard.

I also hate typical work clothes -- uber uncomfortable and not always stylish or unique.

The above would probably be most appropriate for an office that isn't too strict, obviously. Still, there are some general rules that would work in all office settings.

  • If you want to stay cool, wear pants that are either loose fitting or not too snug. Having your legs encased in some fabric is not a good look when you're already sweating buckets.
  • Try to wear lightweight fabrics. I'm not a big fan of linen, but it can be a life saver. Personally, I try to find shirts that are made of either silk or silk-like fabrics. Cotton is also your friend!
  • Sandals are probably best, but they're not always acceptable, so... I think we may sometimes just have to suffer through the heat in closed toe shoes.

Any more tips for not dissolving into a sweaty mess? I'd love to know.

And now for your enjoyment...

Stay cool!
